Category Archives: August Photo Challenge

Five

Wow. Today is the last day of August! That kind of snuck up on me.

You would think posting a photo everyday that I would have some idea of the date, but no. I had better post an amazing photo to get you all to come back and see me for Macro month (which will be back on old trusty). You are probably more familiar with my children than I am by now so I won’t do the obvious hand or foot. No, I thought for my FINAL August Photo I might wow you with… pegs.

Bet you didn’t see that coming.

Four

OK, I considered your thoughts and I managed to find some time this morning to try to get my head around the manual settings on my DSLR. I read a blog entry here that really helped me. When I first heard of ISO, f-stop and shutter speed I thought they might present a challenge. When I couldn’t remember which was which the next day I recognised that they would be one of those things that just weren’t going to stick straight away. So I found something as basic as I could and I used it to create myself a cheat card to put on my carkeys. The process of constructing the card is useful to me in two ways. Firstly, once finished I have a handy reference to take with me for when I get stuck and second, deconstructing the terms and figures to create the card makes requires me to understand it. Otherwise I would have an incorrect and useless reference.

The purpose of me telling you that is that today’s photo is taken with Mr Fancy Pants. I am sure that I will have to rename the camera something else eventually, but alas Mr Fancy Pants stuck.

Here is four.

And then there were two

We all know how fond of my tea cupboard I am.

Its a strange feeling when your Chai syrup looks at you. The look says, “Really? You’re putting us near the banana Quick?? That’s not appropriate. There are two types of beverage flavour and we are not THAT kind.”

At least they have each other.

After Z comes 1

I wanted to use a photo that isolated one without actually being one thing.

Here it is 🙂 Have you seen enough pictures of children’s toys yet? Haha. Unfortunately I don’t have many options on days that I am at home.

For anyone turning their head to the side and looking confused.  That’s one yellow carriage.

Z is for zigzag

Z is for zigzag. There aren’t many zigzags to be found in a Pine plantation forrest which is where I was today. I did manage to find one.

When I got home I was eating tea and noticed this zigzag.

Then I saw another z.

I am…moving onto number 1.

X is for xylem

X is for xylem.

No, I didn’t make it up. It refers to the woody part of a plant, in this case a daisy. I found it was pretty difficult to get an inspiring photo of the middle of a daisy bush. There is a LOT of woody plant under the beautiful outside. The inside…not so much. So I decided to um…trim the daisy and poke part of it back in backward. In the interest of not harming any daisy bushes in the making of this photo I have replanted it and it will make a new daisy.

X is also for xanthic. It is a botanical term refering to a yellowish colour.

Our neighbours house has a huge cactus in the garden surrounded by some sort of lemon smelling thing. From what I can work out the neighbour has not set foot in the garden since the house was bought over 5 years ago. So when I walked into the front garden behind the fence and started taking photos I felt fairly confident that it was not a big deal and that I would not be discovered. I often pick the lemon smelling thing and put it on my dining table as it has an amazing lemony smell that permiates my house. I love it. It grows like a weed which is probably why it has survived in his garden, but I won’t be planting it in mine. I don’t need to, I have a ready supply across the road.

Anyway, the point of that was that the cactus has gone yellow this winter. It has been cold and I don’t think cactus are fond of that.

And just to be too clever for my own good I decided to combine xylem from the lemon thing and xanthic from both plants (neither are particularly happy). Take that X! Unfortunately I finished it up with a less than inspiring photo, but still.

And finally for your interest in the letter X (I know you are enthralled), Xanthippe. This is a shrewish or ill tempered woman, which is how I have been this morning after being woken up all night by W who is sick and E who is having nightmares. I’ll spare you a photo.

W is for want

W is for want. This is the face of someone who really wants me to stop taking photos and give her a scratch.

This is the face of my son W. I love this portrait for the biscuit on his face. Happiness is a smiley face covered in biscuit.

W is also for wonderful, which is what I think about W.

V is for vent

Its just been one of those days. This is the best I can do for V. I confess I have been distracted by the merge theme. During nap time I have been trying to take merge photos and so V is for vent. It is also for very frustrated by limitations. Whether it be lack of knowledge, inability to translate thought to product or at producing substandard images, I am…going to do better.
